Namugongo Martyrs Shrine: Discover Uganda’s Historic Place of Faith and Pilgrimage

If you are searching for places to visit in Kampala and its surrounding areas, the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine is an important destination to add to your itinerary.

Located in Wakiso District, approximately 15 kilometres from central Kampala, Namugongo is one of Uganda’s most significant religious and historical sites. It commemorates the Uganda Martyrs, Christian converts who were executed during the reign of Kabaka Mwanga II of Buganda in the late 19th century.

Today, Namugongo attracts pilgrims, religious visitors, historians and tourists from Uganda and around the world. It offers an opportunity to learn about Uganda’s Christian heritage while experiencing one of East Africa’s important pilgrimage destinations.

Whether you are visiting Uganda for a holiday, business or AFCON 2027, Namugongo is worth including in your travel plans.

The History of Namugongo Martyrs Shrine

The story of Namugongo dates back to the 1880s, when Christianity was spreading in the Kingdom of Buganda.

During the reign of Kabaka Mwanga II, several young Christian converts at the royal court faced persecution because of their religious beliefs. Many refused to abandon their faith despite pressure to do so.

On 3 June 1886, a number of these converts were executed at Namugongo. Their story became an important part of Uganda’s religious history.

The Uganda Martyrs are commemorated by both the Catholic and Anglican churches. The 22 Catholic martyrs were canonised by Pope Paul VI in 1964, while the Anglican Church also honours its martyrs.

The Two Main Shrines at Namugongo

One of the interesting things about visiting Namugongo is that you can explore two important religious sites.

1. The Catholic Uganda Martyrs Basilica

The Catholic Basilica of the Uganda Martyrs is one of the most recognisable religious landmarks in Uganda.

Its distinctive architectural design draws inspiration from a traditional African hut, with a large circular structure supported by pillars. The basilica was officially opened in 1975 and declared a Minor Basilica in 1993.

Visitors can explore the church, learn about the Catholic martyrs and appreciate the peaceful atmosphere of the shrine grounds.

2. The Anglican Martyrs Shrine

Namugongo also has an Anglican Martyrs Shrine, commemorating the Anglican Christians who died for their faith.

The Anglican site provides another perspective on the history of the Uganda Martyrs and the development of Christianity in Uganda.

Visiting both shrines gives travellers a broader understanding of the religious history associated with Namugongo.

Things to See and Experience at Namugongo

1. Explore the Martyrs’ Historical Sites

Discover the places associated with the Uganda Martyrs and learn about the events that took place during the reign of Kabaka Mwanga II.

2. Visit the Martyrs’ Lake

The Catholic shrine grounds include a lake that forms part of the pilgrimage environment. It is an important feature of the site and is used during major religious celebrations.

3. Experience the Spiritual Atmosphere

Visitors can appreciate the peaceful environment, attend religious services where appropriate or spend time reflecting at the shrine.

4. Learn About Uganda’s Christian Heritage

A visit to Namugongo offers insight into the history of Christianity in Uganda and the role played by early Christian converts.

5. Discover the Annual Uganda Martyrs Day Celebrations

Every year on 3 June, thousands of pilgrims travel to Namugongo to commemorate the Uganda Martyrs.

The celebrations attract visitors from across Uganda, East Africa and other parts of the world. Many pilgrims walk long distances as part of their spiritual journey.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Namugongo?

Namugongo can be visited throughout the year. However, 3 June is particularly significant because it is Uganda Martyrs Day, when large numbers of pilgrims gather at the shrines.

If you prefer a quieter sightseeing experience, consider visiting outside the main annual celebrations.

It is advisable to confirm guided tour arrangements and access to particular areas before travelling.

How Far Is Namugongo from Kampala?

Namugongo is approximately 15 kilometres from Kampala city centre, although the actual journey time depends on traffic and your starting point.

The destination can be included in a half-day or full-day Kampala sightseeing itinerary.

Visitors can also combine Namugongo with other attractions around Kampala, depending on their available time.
